Although Week of the Young Child (WOYC) officially runs April 5–11, it’s never too late to celebrate its message. WOYC honors young children, their families, and the educators who support them. Even after the official dates, providers can continue to embrace its themes by incorporating fun, meaningful activities that promote learning, creativity, and connection in early childhood programs.
Each day of WOYC is centered around a different theme. Use the ideas below to keep the celebration going in your classroom or care environment!
Music Monday
Music supports language development, coordination, and self-expression.
- Start the day with a group sing-along or movement song.
- Encourage children to create simple instruments using everyday materials like paper towel rolls, beans, or rubber bands.
Tasty Tuesday
Healthy eating is essential for growing minds and bodies.
- Invite children to help prepare a simple snack using safe, age-appropriate steps.
- Talk about colors, textures, and where different foods come from.
Work Together Wednesday
Teamwork builds problem-solving and social-emotional skills.
- Set up building or design challenges using blocks, boxes, or classroom materials.
- Encourage group storytelling or cooperative games.
Artsy Thursday
Art fosters creativity, fine motor development, and self-expression.
- Provide a variety of materials such as paint, clay, fabric, or natural items.
- Focus on the creative process rather than the final product.
Family Friday
Families are a child’s first and most important teachers.
- Invite families to participate in a classroom activity, story time, or cultural share.
- Create a “Families in Our Community” wall with photos or drawings contributed by each child.
